Angie is a 29 year old recovering addict who spends her time getting high and playing video games. At least, that was the plan until the zombie apocalypse started and she had to run for her life. After a close call in San Antonio, Angie and her friends soon find themselves amidst a questionable cult, ran by a man who calls himself The Preacher. It isn't long before she's forced to decide who's worth saving; her friends or herself.

Our author is swinging for the fences with this book. This is the second in her series following Angie, a young woman with a really rough past, as she makes her way through the zompocalypse like a quirky, machete-wielding, gore-stained, sweaty, slightly clutzy, and somewhat goth, avenging angel. The change of her character that began toward the end of the last novel is making its effects known. Angie is becoming someone not to be f'd with lightly.Despite that growing badassedness, I was still genuinely on edge while reading. Angie is clearly not invincible. She and her companions run into some very bad stuff - and they lose the upper hand. Things get grim. The author lets you know that tragedy stalks the group and death could grab any of your favorite characters and pull them down with little warning. There are other dangers besides the undead out there, and with no ambulances, hospitals, or police....
This is a very fun read - so don't get me wrong here! However, while there is still dry humor and earthy sexuality, Angie's internal musings have taken a darker turn. The tone of this novel is not as light as the first. The exigencies of surviving in a zombie wasteland trigger memories of surviving the wasteland of her younger life; she sometimes slips and finds herself absorbed in thinking about the bad times. Now the underpinnings of her toughness are revealed in just how crazy her life was when caught up with drugs and other things, and how truly bad growing up was for her. We learn a little about her scars - literal and metaphorical.
Breaking out the backstory did not slow the novel down however, and the author kept up the pounding zombie novel pacing of the first book. Relaxing your guard is not a good idea in this world of the zombie plague. The action is awesome. Though there are times when most readers are going to have to consciously suspend disbelief, these are rare. (And anyway, did you forget you were reading a novel about zombies?)
The book flows well and dragged me along in the current. Numerous classic elements of zombie literature are used to excellent effect along the way: the clustering of zombie mega-hordes, the untrustworthy government, the quest to create a cure, the emergence of splinter dystopias, the never ending search for food and weapons, the barbarism of man behind the flimsy veil of civilized society, and so on. This is a great example of the genre.
The writing is really good and, apart from some homonyms that slipped threw, is easy to get lost in. Before you know it you only have a few pages left... and then it's The End. Fortunately for all reading, this ending is more like half-time in a really exciting game. It has been satisfyingly close so far, and you know it's not over yet. It leaves you eagerly waiting for the teams to take the field again.
Bottom line: This book delivers.

Not Dead Yet This is the End Lisa Biesiada 9781520183718 Books Reviews
I loved the first book and quite honestly I haven't found many ongoing stories to be better than the first! This is truly an exception to that, amazingly so! Such a great story, characters that become embedded in so many ways in mind and heart and the only thing I am bumming over is that there isn't another book to sink my teeth into and lose myself in so I can escape from the realities of my life., if only for a moment! I am very grateful that writers like Lisa share their inspired imagination and talent so people like me can grab even a small bit of happiness, for even just a little bit of time. This is a MUST read for anyone who truly enjoys reading this type of genre or anyone who appreciates well written, inspired stories!! It would definitely be a blockbuster movie-Lisa get a literary agent if you don't already have one! I would be the first person in line to see it! That's coming from someone who lives in the fahking middle of nowhere, far from the things of man............
Argh! Ok, with the intention of keeping away from spoilers;
I enjoyed the first book - it was from a new perspective and character outlook, and had a good pace. It did fall into the formulaic zombie apocolypse people-bad, but generally, I was very happy and looking forward to the next installment.
Again, for this one, the writing is good, the pace and descriptions good, the character development for the main characters good. The supporting cast again gets a bit formulaic. But my biggest problem is the ending. I know we are going for a "not your normal ending". But you just end up falling into the other side of a contrived, unrealistic ending on the other side.
It's less the ending, but how they get there. The decision making is just not realistic. I can count off as things were rushing to the end (and it felt rushed - like "I'm tired of writing this, let me get to the end"), where I couldn't even see irrational people making the same decisions, let alone the characters that had been developed and had some level of intelligent thought. It just ended up contrived and unreasonable, even in the situation crafted. Didn't work for me.
