A ten-year-old's new home on an exotic Caribbean island proves so fascinating she quickly forgets she didn't want to leave Texas. After all, where better than a jungle world teeming with voodoo, mystery, and a really pesky zombie, to indulge her favorite pastime snooping.
In this humorous mystery, award-winning author Jinx Schwartz transports the reader to another time and place where rivers, and little girls, ran wild and free.

Land Of Mountains edition by Jinx Schwartz Children eBooks

I wasn't sure what to expect from Land Of Mountains but being familiar with the author's Hetty Coffee series (which I've read all of them), I looked forward to a rollicking read...and got it. Lizbuthann was a fascinating character and her adventurous spirit just took my breath away. Reading the book gave me insights to Haiti and helped me learn a bit more about this country. The author's talent to portray this girl's imaginative adventures and daring-do much like her hero the comic book character Brenda Starr is astounding. Filter in generous doses of humor and you've got a very saisfying read.

Land Of Mountains edition by Jinx Schwartz Children eBooks Reviews

This book may be for kids, but I just loved it. The writing is beautifully simple, yet very evocative of the jungles of Haiti. Jinx Schwartz, the author of the Hetta Coffey series shows how versatile she can be. The story is from the perspective of a precocious eleven year old girl who is transplanted from Texas to Haiti. The cast of characters are wonderful and there's mystery enough to keep you guessing all the way through. Give yourself a gift and read this book!
This wonderful book is an entertaining and exciting read. This is based on Schwartz life as a child in Haiti. Now perhaps the real Jinx did not save the dam, but I have chosen to believe every word. Read you will not regret it. I am 76 and fall into the appropriate age group for the book. Don't miss her mystery series.
Elizabeth Ann an 11 year old living in Texas and moves to Haiti with her family. Her father has a job there building a dam in the mountains. Lizbuthann as they call her is so funny the way she interprets words and the meanings. She is always getting into mischief with her new friend Doux Doux, Jinx picks up the Texas language and carries it through the book along with a wonderful description of Haiti!
I enjoyed this book so thoroughly I'm writing a very rare review to encourage others to read it. Well written, well edited. Loved the character development, setting and the story. It truly transported me to another time and place, and made me laugh out loud at this main true character's approach to life. Jinx Schwartz knows how to use language, describing things so well they are vivid in your mind. Thank you Jinx Schwartz for sharing such a wonderful story/adventure. I have read all but one of your novels and you consistently produce top quality reads.
Well, I wasn't going to read this book, but I like the author's style so much that I said, "What the heck", and bought a copy. It's fantastic! I had no inkling of what people went through to build that dam in Haiti or why they would want to. It's a confusing country. Beautiful, I'm sure, but it doesn't seem like a good place to take a family. I was fascinated with seeing the island through the eyes of a young girl, especially a Texas girl that has the same kind of background growing up as I did. I can't imagine being uprooted from a land so radically different and learning to understand and love the new place. But Jinx is a special person who sees things that most of us do not. Land of Mountains is a lovely, fast and engaging read that I highly recommend to anyone.
I loved this book by one of my favorite authors. I have been a fan of the Hetta Coffey series, and stumbled on this YA novel as a recommended link. The setting in 1950s Haiti was a very different approach to this fun and interesting story. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the adventures of the main character Elizabeth Ann, but I learned a lot of history and cultural lessons as well. I gave it a "some sexual content" rating, but it was really only the innuendo that came up from an adolescent girl's curiosity, not graphic sex. The main story line focused on the superstitious beliefs (voodoo-ism) of the Haitian natives and how a young girl put her imagination to work finding fun on the island. These elements would not put me off from recommending it for a reader 12 and over.
I just finished reading Land of Mountains. It's the ninth book that I have read consecutively by Jinx Schwartz in a reading binge of her books that is only going to end because after I read The Texicans there will be nothing left until she writes another book. I am absolutely captivated by her writing style. She is unparalleled when it comes to character development, something which I have always thought was THE most important thing a writer can do. In this particular book she does an incredible job of viewing the world through the eyes of a twelve-year-old girl. It reminds me a bit of Bill Watterson, whose "Calvin and Hobbes" strip always got it so right when viewing the world through the eyes and thoughts of a young boy. Jinx's fertile imagination never seems to run out of ideas. I was amazed by the fact that I read the entire Hetta Coffey series without getting bored or sensing that Jinx was losing steam. Another thing I love about Jinx's writing is the way she seems to be able to build up a tense situation and then suddenly inserting some laugh-out-load humor right in the middle of it. THAT, ladies and gentlemen is true talent! I will read the Texicans and then begin the process of anxiously awaiting Jinx's eleventh book. I honestly believe that she is one of the best writers out there and I hope she keeps writing for a long, long time.

On a side note, I found it interesting that she spoke of Hurricane Hazel passing over Haiti. I'm just about the same age as the heroine and even now I remember when Hurricane Hazel passed over my home in Maryland. She was still packing quite a whallop!
I wasn't sure what to expect from Land Of Mountains but being familiar with the author's Hetty Coffee series (which I've read all of them), I looked forward to a rollicking read...and got it.
